11.2002 - Montezuma's Well is quite an interesting place and, in my opinion, more fun than Montezuma's Castle. Is it because I prefer the less traveled areas? I don't know. Perhaps the scale is not as grand, nor the feats as amazing as what went in to the construction of the Castle, but this area is still well worth your while. After a pretty easy hike up a hill (stairs are provided), you come upon a lookout point that allows you to see the entire sinkhole known as Montezuma's Well. But don't just turn around and walk back to the car. Be sure to follow the trails that take you down toward the bottom of the hole. Several well preserved ruins can be seen up close at the end of that short trail. Then you can follow around another trail that will take you on a slighly longer route toward the parking lot. Be sure to visit the drainage area where the well has a system of irrigation ditches dug. By whom, I'm not sure. (Entrance and parking are free, though donations are gladly accepted.) See http://www.nps.gov/moca/well.htm for more information.
